Tumor Markers
Tumor markers are substances that suggest the possibility of cancer in the body of a person.
A classic tumor marker is a protein that may be present in the blood at a higher than normal amount related to the presence of certain types of cancer, but not all tumor markers are express themselves in the same way.
Some are found in the urine or other body fluids, whereas others may be present in tumors and other tissues. They may be produced by the cancer cells themselves, or by the body in response to cancer or other conditions.
Most tumor markers are proteins, but some recent consist of genes or other substances.
Tumor markers alone are rarely enough evidence to prove the existence of cancer. When a physician is suspicious of the level of a tumor marker, he or she will do a differential diagnosis along with the patient’s history and physical examination, as well as other laboratory tests and imaging studies to complement his diagnosis.
